A Resolution In Memoriam

Proposed by His Grace, the Duke of Minhiriath, Lord Great Steward

WHEREAS His August Majestie's Council-General meets today upon the twenty-eighth anniversary of the death of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Doctor of Letters in University College, Dublin, the University of Nottingham and the University of Oxford, Doctor of Philosophy and Letters in the University of Liege, Honorary Doctor in the University of Edinburgh, Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, sometime Merton Professor of English Language and Literature in the University of Oxford, and

WHEREAS the Council-General, meeting at the World Science Fiction Convention, notes that the World Science Fiction Society honored Professor Tolkien's work with awards in the common years 1974 and 1978, and

WHEREAS by direction of His Highness, the Duke of Ithilien, Lord Great Steward, the death of Professor Tolkien was observed by decorating the Royal Standard with signs of mourning,

Now Therefore Be it resolved by the Peers of the Realms and other Representatives of the true and faithful subjects of His August Majestie the King of Gondor and Arnor in Council-General assembled that the Nineteenth day of the month of Ivanneth be regularly observed as a national day of remembrance and that His Grace the Lord Great Steward be requested to provide appropriate direction for such observance.
