Annandale Home > About Annandale
Annandale Military Academy is the fictitious school which provides the setting for the fantasy novel Rough Magicke (Bloomington, IN: Unlimited Publishing, 2005), by John William Houghton. The county of Wabana, the town of Annandale and its eccentric early citizen, John Marshall Glenarm, were the inventions of the Hoosier author Meredith Nicholson, in his 1905 novel The House of a Thousand Candles, though Nicholson's novel has a girls school (St. Agatha's), rather than a military academy.
The main purpose of this site is to provide background information for Rough Magicke, such as a Campus Map, explanations of some of the technical terms and campus slang used in the book, and a chart of Jonathan Mears' genealogy.
The Library's Special Collection section has a sample chapter to download.
The Quartermaster's Store has a special on certain books, along with information on how to order Rough Magicke through chain and independent bookstores.
Some corrections to the text have been noted here.
In keeping with the long tradition of designing ideal schools, a few of the departmental pages (like the Chapel and the English Department) actually are pretty much just what they look like.
And there's a page about the author, with an interview and a c.v.
Depending on your browser and your screen resolution, you may find that some pages in the site give you two sets of scroll bars; moreover, the usual scroll bars sometimes end up hiding the second set. If you can't seem to get to the part of a page you want, check and see whether there's a second scroll bar hiding at the bottom or the far right.
